Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm born in Brooklyn, New York to a mother from the Caribbean island of Barbados and a father from Guyana. 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to Congress and in 1972, she became the first major party African American candidate for President of the United States.
She died in Florida at the age of 80 in 2005.
