First African American representative to chair a committee in Congress born

William Levi Dawson was born in Albany, Georgia. He was the first African American to serve as the chairman of a regular congressional committee serving as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in Executive Departments in the Eighty-first and Eighty-second Congresses.
