The Watts Riots begin
The riot began in Watts, when Lee Minikus, a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer, pulled over Marquette Frye, who Minikus believed was intoxicated because of his observed erratic driving. A group of people began to gather and throw rocks at the police. Over the next six days 34 people were reported dead (28 black) 1,072 people were injured, and 4,000 people were arrested.
