Father of soca music born

Ras Shorty I born Garfield Blackman in Lengua, Trinidad and Tobago. he began his career as the calypsonian Lord Shorty. He created a new musical style by mixing elements of calypso with chutney music from Trinidad's East Indian population thereby creating soca.

His hit song "Indrani" released in 1973 is considered to be the first recorded soca song.
