Black secret agent Mary Elizabeth Bowser was born on this day near Richmond, Virginia. Bowser was a black undercover agent for Ulysses S. Grant. She worked as servant in the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis where she gathered military intelligence. She acted crazy to avoid suspicion earning her the nickname "Crazy Bet."
