Congressman George Leland dies in plane crash

African American Congressman George Thomas "Mickey" Leland, members of his congressional staff, and State Department officials die in an aircraft crash near Gambela, Ethiopia while en route to a United Nations refugee camp near the Sudan-Ethiopia border.
