Edmonia Lewis, First Internationally Acclaimed African American Sculptor Born

Born as Mary Lewis to a Haitian father and Native American mother from the Chippewa tribe. Several of her pieces are now renown including "The Death of Cleopatra" she later moves to Europe living in Rome, England and France.
