Denmark Vesey and aides executed
Slave rebellion leader Denmark Vesey and five of his aides were hung at Blake's Landing, Charleston, South Carolina.
Vesey was a West Indian slave from the then Dutch Caribbean Island of St. Thomas who bought his own freedom using money from lottery winnings in South Carolina.
Inspired by the Haitian revolution he began to plan a slave rebellion which was to take place on July 14th, 1822. The plot was leaked and a total of 67 men were convicted and 35 were executed by hanging including Vesey.
